title no.45 – ‘an high priest after the order of Melchisedec’

Heb 6V17  Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the
immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:  V18  That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:  V19  Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;  V20  Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec – another title with the high priest in it – but this one with reference to Melchisedec.  Who was this Melchisedec, – he was a king and a priest away back in the days of Abraham who received a blessing from him in Gen ch 14.   It says without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.

The Lord Jesus is a king and like Melchisedec he is a king of peace – not just the Prince of Peace.  The Lord Jesus is a Priest – as Paul has already noted a great high priest.  The Lord Jesus was Prophet, Priest and King – the 3 offices mentioned in the Old Testament who were anointed with oil.  With Melchisedec it does not mention his genealogy – it is simply shrouded in mystery. Also we are not told of how long his life was.  He did of course die but it too is shrouded in mystery.  So the reference to be like our Lord Jesus Christ.

All the other high priests in Israel were descendants of Aaron – so they were of the Aaronic priesthood.  Jesus was not – for all of Aaron’s descendants died and their period of being a high priest ended with death.  The Lord Jesus now lives in the power of an endless life – he will not die – his priesthood is not of Aaron’s.  It is of the order of Melchisedec for the Lord Jesus had neither beginning of days or end of life – so for that reason the Lord Jesus is said to be , made a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
